The 4th Capping and Candle Lighting Ceremony for Level III students of Bachelor of Science in Nursing course of Arellano University Pasay Campus was held at Fiesta Pavilion,Manila Hotel, on 29th July 2008.

With a candle-lighting ceremony and the recitation of the Florence Nightingale Pledge, 480 student nurses marked the successful completion of completion of nursing students’ sophomore year. In the capping ceremony, they receive the nursing pin, female students also receive the traditional nurses’ cap, for which the ceremony originally got its name.

Presided over by Mr Francisco PV Cayco, President and CEO, Arellano University and the chief guest who gave an inspirational talk was Leah Primitiva S. Paquiz, National President, Philippine Nurses.

The chief guest emulated to the students the values of integrity and commitment to the nursing profession. She also emphasized that success is a choice. As nurses, one should have a vision and mission, work hard and focus on the path that we have chosen to take.

Mr Francisco PV Cayco, President and CEO, Arellano University also addressed the students. He told the students it was an honor to be able to help them celebrate the accomplishment of having made it this far in their journey to becoming a nurse. He called Arellano nurses as nurses of the world, hoping to see and hear more Arellano nurses excelling in the filed of nursing around the world.

Also present during the ceremony were Ms Mildred A. Atendido, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean Arlene Blaise Cortez, Dean College of Nursing AU Pasay, Chief nurses of Base and Affiliating Hospitals.

It was a solemn and symbolic ceremony witnessed by the student’s parents and relatives especially when they received the lighted candle of Florence Nightingale. Near the end of the ceremony, the students took a pledge with a candle in the ceremony, which reaches back to Florence Nightingale, known as the “lady with the lamp.” As a tribute to Nightingale’s dedication, the lamp icon became symbolic of nursing.

Blogging has become part of my life these days. I blog whenever I have the time and of course it serve as form of therapy for any physical or emotional upheavals I may have for the day. Reading the blogs of my kids keep me track on what’s on their thoughts and what’s keeping them busy.

As I browse and scan the book, Blogging From Home, I find it very practical and useful for the things I need to know about blogging, since I’m barely new in this endeavor.

It’s readable, simple English , big font ( I’m in my forties, I need my reading glasses !) and presented in an outline form with sample charts and web pages. Just like how a teacher teaches inside the classroom with the proper visual aids, I love the book for being so instructional!

I have to take note about the portion on Blog ethics and the conclusion part, blogging Ahead. If blogging is now a serious activity, it might as well really practice ethics, aside from plagiarism and copyright , there’s respect of individual’s right and always tell the truth. There should be balance between the benefit and the harm done by blogging.

Blogging did influence my life (see my previous post).

Thank you Janette for publishing a book about blogging. Thank you for the support you have been extending to bloggers.

Since summer of this year, I have been into several blogger’s events to accompany my kids or to just tag along and be involved with the activities of my kids. With these, I came to know that what they are involved in and why they are so hook to the net!

My kids did encouraged me to put this blog and the next thing I knew my Fridays have to be reserved for these events or I have to adjust my schedule no matter how busy and tired in order to be with them . I must admit I did enjoy blogger’s party and now my free time is spend on catching up with the blogs that I have missed writing.

As a doctor, I have attended so many seminars, symposium sponsored by drug companies and launchings of new medicines in classy hotels with sit-down dinner, socializing, and many freebies too. It came to a point that I got tired of attending them.

As I look back, these bloggers events are reminiscent of the events that I used to attend but with so many twists. Attendees are from all ages (I remember, at the David and Goliath bloggers party, there was a contest on who was the youngest and oldest attendee). All occupations, all professions are welcome as long as one blogs. No dress code when attending the events (carefree dressing, casual, rugged. smart casual, I love it, reminiscent of my “maong & T shirt” days at UP). I love the idea that the young crowd is apt to more undertakings that are worthwhile.

Some of the blog events that I have attended are David and Goliath, Chow king Halo-Halo, Chao Fan, Buhay ng Coke 1 & 2 and Ponds at SM Hypermart Taste Asia, BK Bloggers Blowout, etc, most recent is Influential blog awards and soon the WordCAMP.

I must admit that I am enjoying these blogging events because it brought me closer to my kids life and the bonding that we share is incomparable than what we use to have before. I came to know more about them their thoughts, feelings and even their aspirations from their blogs, which I read almost everyday. I always look forward to their new entries everyday. They would ask me “ Mama, nag blog kana ba? Do have a new blog?

Now is the time to capture these moments with my kids, thank you blogging!

Through the years, we had this family practice of having our family picture taken during the Christmas season. The focus of course is how my kids have become grown ups and me adding more years into my life. Like most moms, we could talk the whole day about what our kids are up to or what keeps them through the day without me. For a busy mom like me I realize that one day I just woke up and they are this way bringing meaning into my life.

Each day I treasure the gifts given to me by my children. They are not material things but special gestures and moments that make me go through my hectic schedule. My VITAMIN K and VITAMIN H as I would say, Kisses and Hugs from them, a touch a smile a greeting Hi MAMA!, unloads my tiredness. Their stories for the day in school, significant events and latest news they would tell me as I go to sleep. I wish I had more time to be a part of the world they are in.

How does one capture this family closeness and never let it end. Sometimes I just wish they stop growing and I stop getting old so that this would just be a cycle that will keep on repeating. My youngest 14, is turning out to be a fine woman. She is beginning to have her faves and dislikes. My only boy, 17 , is honing his computer talents and very promising. My eldest, 19, I’m proud of building her nursing career.

I may have been successful in my professional career but Its still the most rewarding career after all, that of motherhood. My gifts, My treasures Dianne Kristin, Adrian Jeric and Roxanne Marie.

As it was 35 years ago when I was still a kid, I remember the Pond’s commercial on TV. It shows how a woman maintain her youth fullness and look younger by using Pond’s cream. That TV commercial really imprinted something on my mind that I have to use this cream on my face to keep me younger looking. Through the years, I have been using Pond’s cold cream to remove my make –up.

I am glad that even with the advent of newer skin care products, Pond’s is still in the market but now with a variety of products for varied skin types and even formulated for the Filipina skin type. Even the packaging can be considered as hygienic, as it comes in a tube or easy squeeze container.

For those who want to use Pond’s, start having a skin care routine (especially those in their late 30’s) Pond’s Age Miracle line like the overnight repair cream and their eye treatment can be your starters. It’s better to start using one product at a time until your skin adjusts to it and see the results. It will only take you 10 minutes of your time in the evening to Cleanse, Moisturize and Rejuvenate your face. You owe it to yourself, start now and have a skin care routine and delay the signs of aging.

But with the new technology around, I think I need to learn more of this, all in the name of this new craze called blogging. Good thing that Mindanao Bloggers organized the first ever WordCamp in Southeast Asia— WordCamp Philippines 2008 together with the following sponsors:

One of the most exciting but relaxing summer vacations we had was in Laiya, San Juan Batangas, a place 70 kms south of Manila known for its white sand beaches.

We made no reservations for our overnight stay and true enough all the beach resorts were fully booked for it was a Saturday. We were so stressed looking for a place to stay , all I though was that we would go back to Manila.

A friend saved our day and advised us to go back to San Juan town proper and check in at Bahay Marikit, 20 minutes drive from Laiya. Good enough it turned out to be a wise decision on our part. Check this hotel resort it’s a cozy, quiet place clean rooms and economical too. Family room was priced at P 3500.00 which could accommodate 6-8 persons. We ordered dinner and retreat to our Italian inspired room , actually good for eight persons, private bath and shower, nice white towels. Included in our accommodation was American breakfast and free use of the swimming pool. We dipped in the pool for an hour and out we go to dive at the beach at Laiya San Jua Batangas.

My kids and I had a sumptuous lunch at Naranja Orange Restaurant, managed and owned by Mrs Racquel Reano, its located at Gen. Luna St, Poblacion San Juan Batangas . The place is an old antique house , with a touch of something old to suit a restaurant. We had their famous chicken orange, pinakbet, sisig, bulalo, own concocted lemon cold tea. Immediately, we concentrated on the act of consuming what was laid before us. Never miss Naranja Orange restaurant, prices are so affordable, servers are so accommodating and no parking hassle like in Manila. Perfect place to eat lunch with family and friends.

After our lunch we, headed to Doña Nena Beach Resort . It was Sunday and only a few people are at the beach. My kids did not waste their time to enjoy the water and the sand. What I loved about this beach is the presence of mangrove in the area, trees, particularly neem and coconut trees. Not so many people around, quiet and clean environment .Suited for family reunions, company outings with overnight acommodations. Food catering is served by Orange Naranja restaurant. Contact Mrs Racquel Reano, (0917-3733-113) for catering services in San Juan Batangas.

Our one night stay at San Juan Batangas turned out to be nice, much more, to what we have expected. We realy want to go back again and spend at least two nights to savor the beach and food.

Hurrah for my new found activity! It’s never too late to learn new things specially if it involves new technology. At my age, I should be just relaxing, visiting the salon and having those spa massages, trying to catch up on the latest news about friends or even just malling around and waiting for my kids to grow up. However, no, I have to start a new activity in preparation for my retirement in the coming years. With this I can do all of this things at the comforts of my home.

At least with blogging, its means a quiet moment for me, information available at my fingertips and I’m home with my kids. The whole day, I talked to many people, I mingle with so many people, I and it’s all people all around me. I am a shy person, however because of work I have to stand up before an audience most of the time to talk, I got used to it. I did keep a diary before when I was in college and that was my first writing, I did write for 2 years every day. Now they would call it a journal. What was written in the diary was the most kept secret of an individual. Just like in the movies where personal secrets are revealed. Now at this cyber age, you get to tell the whole world what is happening in your life through this blog.

Are bloggers are the shy type? Maybe not, because they got lots of net friends and stories to tell. If time permits, every hour of their life, their activities, their wants and dislikes or just an expression they want to share with friends. Bloggers come from all occupations / lifestyle and of varied ages .I love to be a part of bloggers community. Is there already an existing bloggers culture? Do give me feedback on this.

To my readers: hello, hello , hello, hello how are you ? I’m glad to be with you, and you and you tra la la la…. tra la la la … tra la la la (a girl scout activity song in meeting new friends)
