Nursing students under this program while studying at Arellano University International Nursing Program will use either a USA or Australian nursing curriculum. Nursing students will take their 3 years study at Arellano University INP in Legarda, Manila and their senior year at either Alderson-Broaddus College in West Virginia or Edith Cowan University in Australia.

High school graduates, transferees and second courses may apply. Applicants will have to pass a screening interview, a writing test and the American Council of Testing Exam (ACT).

Time flies so much, as I look back, I feel relaxed this school opening. The kids are independent in their school works. All I do is provide the resources needed to be an independent learner. They have their everyday routine and  all must practice autonomy as a student.That is a house rule.

This is the time of my life that I have to cherish; little by little my responsibilities are diminishing day by day. The secret lies in doing things that I like, neglect unfavorable situation for a while; anyway time will find its own solution.

My kids and I are all in school. We never stopped being students. As my Dad would always say, being a student is the most memorable times of your life! For the last 5 years I have been a teacher but I never stopped being a being student!

Let them Shine! Empowering Your Children to Discover Their Full Potential, is this year’s theme of Kumon Philippines newest project, Education & Parenting Seminar Series 2010, this aims to educate and enlighten parents on the concept of self-learning skills that will aid in raising a responsible child.

The first leg of seminar happened at SM MOA, Cinema 1 last March 21, 2010. Guest speakers were Dr Melissa Lopez-Reyes, an Applied Cognitive and Education Psychologist and Paolo Benigno Aquino IV, a young Global Leader Awardee. They were also joined by Ms. Olivia Angeles, Mr. Harlan Busto, both parent advocates of self-learning who shared their experiences with their children.

I must have been busy with work as a teacher , medical practitioner, and student these days. As a teacher one never stops studying, I feel I owe my students updated lessons delivered in an innovative  teaching strategy. Teaching has been becoming my passion as I add years to my life. As doctor to my patients, a well-rounded and holistic approach to therapy remains in order.

For the coming days to come, I’ll be preparing for the coming school year. Especially a new nursing curriculum is in place and will be implemented.

My career has always been involved with education. After graduating from medical school, I have worked with the Department of Education for 16 years although not directly involved with teaching students; but as a physician for teachers and students. I was exposed to a life inside the classroom. I did not stop studying. I had my Masters of Public Health in 2000 at UPOU and I was part of the second batch of MPH-DE graduates. I was aiming for a post in the regional level, but I had a change of heart. In 2002, I took up nursing for plans of going abroad and passed all the necessary requirements (CGFNS, NCLEX, IELTS, NLE). Finally, I changed careers; I left the government service in 2005 to go into full time teaching.

Nursing professors were in demand in 2005. I had this opportunity; I applied as a lecturer in several nursing schools. I have been accepted in all because of my master’s degree and my credentials. In 2006, I got tired of studying maybe because of the too many examinations that I took.  However two years ago, I have that inkling again to go back to school for a Masters degree in Distance Education. But, because of work schedules in the College of Nursing and my children going to college I put it on hold.

Now that my eldest daughter is applying for her master’s degree (MAN) and my son currently enrolled in UPOU, I feel the need to go on with what I like—studying and eventually teaching in an alternative way. I like to do new things and innovate with what is being used at present. I have been using the computer for the last 12 years and my children have been instrumental for me to harness my computer skills. One of the things I enjoyed most these days is blogging. Through this, I can connect with other people, teach, entertain, inform and share my thoughts.

This will be my fifth degree if ever I will finish the course, more letters will be attached to my name. But that is not the essence anymore. I just want to be in school again to know what is new and to eventually impart these to others. I firmly believe that a UP education still the best training I have ever received.  I thank UP for imparting to me what quality education is.

This time, during the course of classes being offered via distance education, I look forward to meet new people, gather new ideas and strategies to use inside my classroom, be exposed to a wide range of age groups, the young and the old and know about the use of educational technology. I hope I still have the capability to be proficient in such technology.

It’s about 11 years before my retirement; this will also be a way of preparing for it. Even at the comforts of my home I can still teach or be involve in teaching in my own little way via distance education.

I have been involved in teaching for the last 5 years. A slight deviation from what I do for 16 years having worked for the government and of course clinical work as a physician. But teaching is always a part of being a doctor, treatment for patients will always include advise about diet, medicines, activity etc.

When I had my MPH at UPOU, we did not have online classes, just printed modules to study and classes once or twice a month at the UP College of Public health (‘was 13 years ago). This time purely online classes, hope it really suits my needs.

Just thinking again, what lies ahead of me with all these challenges in work, family life, and domestic affairs? Will I be able to wear my SABLAY again? I’ll keep you posted. And I’ll be updating you with my life as a distant learner at www.distanceeducationblog.com and at EDUC TODAY.

Barcelo challenged the graduates with core values to live by: love of God, integrity, excellence and nationalism. She also informed the graduates of that the Philippine Nurses Association is actively working for job opportunities such as NARS and “entreprenurse” program.

President and CEO of Arellano University congratulated the graduate nurses for their rightful passage to the school of nursing. He is very hopeful and looking forward to the graduate nurses in passing the nursing licensure examinations and keeping the record performance of Arellano University nursing graduates.

The Arellano University COPAR Enhancement Workshop aimed to equip its present nursing faculty members with additional knowledge and skills in community organizing and research. It was a four-day seminar with Day 3 allotted to actual visit of the Arellano University adopted community in San Miguel, Bulacan.

Ms Andreline Ansula, as officer In charge of Community Development Program talked about the COPAR Process. Facilitators of the COPAR Enhancement Program were Mr Eliezer Manga, Mr Eduardo Azuelo and Ms Hyacinth Merioles.

Here are some tips that my students can use in making PowerPoint presentations.

• Font size should be 24 to 30. Arial is preferred. Use a single type of font for most of the presentation. For impact, underline or make the font bold.
• For bullet points, use the 6 x 6 Rule.  One thought per line with no more than 6 words per line and no more than 6 lines per slide. No more than 6-8 words per line.
• Capitalize titles, 35 to 45-font size
• Do not use light colored text, black and blue are very readable. Avoid dark backgrounds
• Always have a dry run of what you are to present. Have your peripherals ready, wireless mouse and extension cord is a must.
• Check the spelling and grammar of your text.
• Give a brief overview of the topic at the start.  Then present the information.  At the end, review important points.

2. 5 Minor Operations (maximum of 2 similar cases; 1 case per student; major case cannot be used as substitute for minor scrubs)
3. 5 Handled Delivery Cases – 1 student per case
4. 5 Assisted Delivery Cases – 1 student per case
5. 5 Initial Cord Care Cases – 1 student per case
6. The Certification of Authenticity of O.R. / D.R. / Initial Cord Care Cases is subscribed and sworn to for free by authorized PRC officials per Office Order No. 7-259 dated September 24, 2007. There is no need to notarize each page of the RLE exhibits. To meet however the exigencies of beating the deadline for filing or towing a long line of applicants, Colleges of Nursing may opt to have notarization done by any independent notary public prior to filing the same documents to the PRC
   1. For major operation, 2 students may actually assist a major surgery or when the procedure takes two (2) hours or more, two (2) similar cases maybe allowed.
   2. For minor operation, two (2) similar cases maybe allowed but only one student may claim the cases.
   3. Deliveries in the community are to be supervised by a clinical instructor with Master’s Degree in Nursing or Allied Medical or Health-Related Sciences and signed by the same before the approval of the Dean.
   4. Note: Emphasis must be given to competencies developed during the intra-operative and intra-partal phase and a variety of cases is preferred.
   5. The faculty member, clinical coordinator, chief nurse and dean WITH ACTUAL ACCOUNTABILITIES in the RLE of the student must be the signatories to the forms.
   6. Student must accomplish as many forms depending on the number of institutions/agencies where the RLE have been conducted. OR-DR-Cord Care Cases completed in two or more hospitals or agencies must bear the signature of the Chief Nurses of the particular institutions or agencies.
   7. The Delivery Room and Initial Cord Care requirements of Registered Midwives who are nursing graduates applying for the Nurse Licensure Examination are hereby WAIVED, provided they submit a “photo copy” of their updated PRC Identification Card.
   8. For nursing graduates who have completed midwifery courses but have not practiced and/or are “under board” beyond five (5) years from date of midwifery graduation, a supervised case of one (1) actually handled delivery and cord care shall be required for the Nurse Licensure Examination properly documented and reported through the required Delivery/Initial Cord Care Forms.
