Transmission

Aedes aegypti, the transmitter of the disease, is a daybiting mosquito which lays eggs in clear and stagnant water found in flower vases, cans, rain barrels, old rubber tires, etc. The adult mosquitoes rest in dark places of the house.

Signs and Symptoms

• Sudden onset of high fever which may last 2 to 7 days.
• Joint & muscle pain and pain behind the eyes.
• Weakness
• Skin rashes – maculopapular rash or red tiny spots on the skin called petechiae
• Nosebleeding when fever starts to subside
• Abdominal pain
• Vomiting of coffee-colored matter
• Dark-colored stools

Prevention and Control
• Cover water drums and water pails at all times to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
• Replace water in flower vases once a week.
• Clean all water containers once a week. Scrub the sides well to remove eggs of mosquitoes sticking to the sides.
• Clean gutters of leaves and debris so that rain water will not collect as breeding places of mosquitoes.
• Old tires used as roof support should be punctured or cut to avoid accumulation of water.
• Collect and dispose all unusable tin cans, jars, bottles and other items that can collect and hold water.

Waterless Metro-Manila

Ninety seven percent of the water supply for Metro-Manila comes directly from Angat Dam, with the 3 to 4 % supplied by ground water from deep wells. The worst has come, water in Angat Dam is at 157.7 meters, 22 meters below the critical level.

The lowest water level recorded in Angat Dam happened in 1998, was 158.15 meters. In 1998, the customer base was only 3.3 million, in 2010, there are approximately 6.1 million. Demand for water has been high because of commercialization and the proliferation of condominiums and subdivisions.

The hardest hit areas are the ones serviced by Maynilad Water, one of the two water concessionaires; the other one is Manila Water. Maynilad water service area covers the West Zone. These areas include: Caloocan, Las Piñas, Malabon, Manila, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Pasay, Parañaque, Valenzuela, parts of Quezon City, a part of Makati, Cavite City, and the municipalities of Rosario, Imus, Noveleta, Bacoor, and Kawit in Cavite.

Metro Manila residents are experiencing six-hour water service reductions. The said water service reductions will last until July 23, or perhaps until water levels in Angat Dam return to its normal levels. Maybe we need another “Ondoy” to fill the Angat Dam to its normal level.

What I am afraid about this development would be the implications on health. Will our water be safe for drinking? That can mean surge of diarrheal diseases, if water is not handled in a sanitary manner. People will stock water in containers, and Dengue mosquito loves clear stagnant water as their breeding ground. Dengue cases in Metro Manila have increased in the last six months. In addition, hand washing is the standard way of preventing any infection.

The clear view is we have to make a remedy now, because water demand by 2016, will be enormous. We all have to do our share, water is life!

Some tips to remember when applying acne medication:

Applying acne medications may sometimes cause slight irritation such as dryness, burning and tightness of the skin. However, this is normal and related to its active ingredients. A remedy would be to apply the acne medication one at a time, or every other day until the skin gets use to it. Applying a light moisturizer in the morning can help.

If the acne medication is cream or gel based, just squeeze a pea size to your fingertip. This is sufficient enough to cover the entire face. But be sure to avoid applying around the yes and lips because these are very sensitive areas wherein the skin is thin. These are medications you are using so reactions can happen if you apply too much.

Clean the face properly. If you wear make-up such as foundation or concealers, be sure to use a make-up remover (cream or lotion based), wash the face gently with mild cleanser and pat dry, do not rub the face nor use hand towels. The face should be clean and dry; residue make-up acts like a barrier so absorption of the medication will be lesser, thereby makes it ineffective.

Excessive exposure to sunlight or UV radiation should be avoided.

Never use other topical acne medications not recommended by your physician because this may cause interactions, or may produce additive irritant effects with your present prescribed drug.

It is best to consult your dermatologist for the proper acne drug suited for the specific type of acne. It is best you have your doctor’s guidance on how to properly apply the acne medication, the length of the acne treatment, the possible reactions that can happen and what to do in such cases.

Be consistent in applying your acne medication. Results cannot be seen overnight, the skin needs time to recover. Compliance to the acne treatment depends on you. Best result is seen when you apply the medication consistently.

I have encountered a lot of people being infected with viral conjunctivitis. The following is a health advisory from the Department of Health. Hand hygiene (hand washing with soap and water or use of hand sanitizer, best is still 70 % isopropyl alcohol) is the basic precaution for all common diseases .

Sore Eyes is a term often used for viral conjunctivitis

Incubation period or time from exposure to onset of symptoms: 5 -12 days

Mode of Transmission

• Direct contact by one’s eyes with hands contaminated with eye secretions of an infected person.

• Touching of eyes with hands getting contact with surfaces, instruments, eye solutions, make-ups contaminated with the virus from an infected person.

• Entry of the virus through the eyes by swimming in poorly chlorinated pools.

Signs and Symptoms

• Begins in one eye and later affects both eyes.

• Watery to pus-like discharge.

• Redness of the eye with pain and/or itching sensation.

• Eyelids that are stuck together on awakening.

• In severe cases, pain of the eyes on exposure to sunlight and foreign-body solution.

Treatment

• There is no specific treatment during the acute phase (1-2 weeks).

• If eye discharge is profuse and pus-like or patient develops blurring of vision or severe pain, consultation with an ophthalmologist is advised.

Prevention

• Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water.

• Minimize hand-to-eye contact.

• Use only own towels, eye drops, make-ups and applicators, sunglasses or eye glasses.

• Wear eye/sunglasses on a windy day to protect one’s eyes from foreign particles

• Avoid crowded places.

• Disinfect surfaces, doorknobs, counters, elevator buttons and hand rails with dilute bleach solution.

• Clothes, towels, pillow cases and anything else which may have come in contact with an infected person should be washed

Is your baby (infants, 0-1 years old) sleeping late or having a hard time falling asleep? Are you becoming an anxious mum because your little boy or girl’s sleep is affecting your quality time with your husband or rules your mood for the next day?

Relax mom, Johnson’s Baby Bedtime is here to be your savior. With their new Johnson’s Baby Bedtime advocacy of a bedtime routine to improve baby’s sleep at night, it’s sure will reduce mom’s anxiety. Johnson’s Baby Bedtime is basically a three-step procedure, done to babies as a routine every night.

Step 1 : a warm bath or “punas”

Step 2: soothing massage

Step 3: some quiet activities

Dr Luis Rivera, MD , a pediatrician and member of the Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine emphasized the importance of sleep for infants growth and development. A sound and longer sleep for babies’ means more growth hormones will be released thus influencing bones and muscles to develop.

My three kids, Dianne (20),Jeric (18) and Roxanne (15), were Johnson’s babies. Since I was a working mum, I used to give them a bath at 6 or 7 pm when they were infants. All along I was practicing the three- step Johnson’s Baby bedtime routine. Massage was applying either Johnson’s baby oil or lotion. At night I breastfeed, so I didn’t have to stand up and mix their milk formula. I swear, I have never experienced sleepless nights taking care of them maybe my body’s warmth and mummy’s Johnson’s baby powder smell was an added help. I can attest that the three- step Johnson’s Baby bedtime routine proved effective for my kid’s health.

For more details about this Johnson’s help to mothers who have growing kids, visit their very informative website.

Del Monte Fit ‘n Right launch its newest campaign Dare to be Fit ‘N Right . The campaign features the revolutionary F.I.T workout by sports scientist and Master Coach Jim Saret. well known core training expert and a sports and fitness writer and lecturer. At present Master Coach Jim Saret is Sports Program Head of the Ateneo de Manila University and the Strength and Conditioning Coach of the PBA, POC, and the PSC.

The F.I.T Workout or the Fast Interval Training is a four-minute workout, characterized by fast bursts of intensive exercise that makes you burn at least 400 calories and continues to burn even when you’re done with the workout!

It was demonstrated to us bloggers and lo and behold, true to its claim, it was able to burn more than 400 calories,. After the 4 minute workout, 96 calories were lost and in a span of 30 -45 minutes, more tan 400 calories even if one stopped working out. It just consists of body movements and the exercise doesn’t require much space and equipment.

The famous training guru even expressed that if you partner your F.I.T workout with your Fit ‘n Right fruit juice drink, you’ll see faster results for Del Monte Fit ‘N Right contains the breakthrough L-Carnitine that helps burn fat and B Vitamis 1, 6, 12 that help speed up metabolism.

A clinical study done by the University of the Philippines through Dra. Leonora Panlasigui and company has proven the effectiveness of Fit ‘n Right. In that study, it was found that one can lose as such as 16.7% body fat in just 6 weeks with regular consumption of Fit ‘n Right, diet and exercise. There are studies that indicate that 1000mg per day is ideal in helping you lose weight along with proper diet and regular exercise. Each Fit ‘n Right bottle contains 300mg and the recommended daily intake is at least 3 bottles, at least 2 hours before exercise or physical activity to maximize the fat-burning benefit.

B Vitamins 1, 6 and 12 are known as energy boosters and they help reduce fatigue and increase endurance by facilitating conversion of carbohydrates, protein and fat into energy. With L-Carnitine, B Vitamins can optimize metabolization of carbohydrates, protein and fat into energy.

I keep on hearing testimonies that Fit and Right really works. As a doctor at times I’m hesitant with such claims, but as I watched and hear the explanations of Coach Saret, about his F.I.T Workout approach and Fit and Right I am convinced about its effect on ones’ metabolism.

Now, who says you can’t have fun while working out and losing all those calories and unwanted fats? Who says you can’t have a refreshing way to burn?

Dare to be the first to try the F.I.T Workout. Dare to be the first to know about it. Dare to be fit. Dare to be right.
