“I clean. I save,” the Philippine Spring Cleaning Day

In the Philippines, eight out of 10 top causes of morbidity are infectious in nature. These diseases like measles, chicken pox and pneumonia are transmitted by sneezing, coughing, spitting, talking and by air currents. On the other hand, diarrhea can be acquired by contaminated water, food, milk and blood.

The infection process is like a circle of links, its a cycle that goes on and on in a sequential manner. To prevent infection is to break the links in the chain of infection. The links are: infectious agent, reservoir, portal of exit from the reservoir, mode of transmission, and portal of entry into a susceptible host.

To break the link of the chain of infection , there are several ways and methods that can be practiced and thus prevent infection. Prevention of infections should start at home!

• Foremost is hand hygiene, either you use soap and water or the available hand sanitizer. Once I enter our home, the first thing that I do is hand washing.

• Anything that is moist is a breeding ground for microorganism thus a source of infection.

  1. 1. In the kitchen, clean and disinfect countertops especially crevices, it will prevent bacteria from hiding there.
  2. 2. Replace sponges and wash cloths often.
  3. 3. Air or sun dry wash cloths, bath, face towels every day, they can be breeding ground for fungus.
  4. 4. Spray the inside of shoes with disinfectant to kill off fungus spores. Never keep shoes in cabinets, air dry them.
  5. 5. Clean and disinfect the floor, vinyl tile, and walls inside an air conditioned room every now and then.

• For your children especially if they are toddlers, select play toys that can easily be cleaned and disinfected, stay away from stuffed furry toys if these will be shared with other children.
• Do away with the hanky, it’s unhygienic. Use tissue to Cover mouth/nose when sneezing, and then dispose properly.

iBlog7 Afterthoughts

by Anna Katharina on April 4, 2011

in Blogging,Events,Newsbits

It’s my second time to join iBlog. I just accompanied my kids (Jeric and Dianne) at iBlog4. I joined them at iBlog 5 (2009) because that was also the time I engaged myself in blogging seriously. We skipped iBlog 6 (2010) due to hectic work schedules.

I was absent the first day but I was glued to the live streaming broadcast of Ms Janette Toral. Though I am almost 3 years into blogging , and a few months into podcasting, I still have a lot to learn. It is a different world from what I usually do, but I have to blend with it, to keep up with the changing times.

There were only a few in the audience who were within my age bracket, was I left out or my children would say O.P (out of place)? That was my initial reason why I blog, I don’t want to be left behind, I want to be involved in what my kids are busy with. Cool mum ha!

Most of the iBlog7 attendees were young and have the capacity and time, to explore more of the Internet, like blogging, gaming and social media applications.

Anyway, iBlog7, is a wake up call for me to do better blogs, by focusing on content, being involve with the community and as a mum provide support to my kids in making their blogs and podcast appropriate to the needs of the times.

No regrets on my part that I have bought microphones for Jeric so many times when he was in the elementary grades. He had this mini karaoke and microphone as a gift when he graduated from nursery. At 19, yes, he is into what he likes, podcasting.

To the new bloggers, young or old, it’s never too late to learn the ins and outs of doing a blog. For whatever reasons on why one blogs, I just hope this is not temporary or just an outlet for the time being. As I have experienced incorporating my blogging activities with my usual work, my reasons for blogging have evolved through the years. I cannot just stop blogging and close my website for I know I have duties to fulfill to my readers, my patients and my students and that is to inform and to educate.

As always ,”I will never stop being a student “, iBog 7  is lifelong learning for me.

Last week…..

by Anna Katharina on February 13, 2011

in Blogging,Family,Journal

I was sick last Monday, decided to stay home and have my much needed bedrest. Tuned in to the news which were mostly about the Senate hearing on corruption in the armed forces. It was sad hearing the generals as they try to evade answering most of the questions. Most of them were graduates of the premier military school in the country, where courage ,integrity and loyalty were ingrained in them.

Tuesday , back to school and my usual routine, still not feeling well. I craved for pastillas de leche from Goldilocks, only to find out that its available only on Fridays. When I was little, lola would always bring me the best pastillas from San Miguel Bulacan.

Wednesday, I had my hospital duty at Caloocan Medical Center with my nursing students. It was their last duty week, and we had discussion on the knowledge, skills and the attitude they have learned and later apply to their forthcoming dealings with their clients. In the afternoon, my daughter and I went to Divisoria to claim her gown for their JS Prom this coming week.

Thursday was duty Day again at the hospital.Had my clinic in the afternoon and attended to clients with different skin conditions. I was able to buy pastillas from Red Ribbon. I ask Nanay to cook homemade sardinas, an old kapampangan recipe from  my Dad.

Friday was another tiring lecture day for me in school. I easily get tired these days. Some of my co-workers experienced the same body aches I had, some were sick with fever. It must have been the erratic weather changes.

My weekend was spent with my youngest daughter who is about to graduate this March from high school. It was the St Mary’s family day. The last family day I have attended for my children. By next  school year, all will be in college. Another grand activity, a birthday party in the evening of a friend from high school. We had fun, food ,booze and bonding to the highest level. A great way to cap the weekend.
