“Solo Parents’ Welfare Act of 2000″ or REPUBLIC ACT NO 8972 was signed into law by then President Joseph Ejercito Estrada in 2000.
Solo parent was defined in terms of 10 categories, common denominator among them was the parent left solo or alone with the responsibility of parenthood. She or he can be anybody, any other person who solely provides parental care and support to a child or children.
I have been a solo parent for 10 years, and I don’t think I have benefited from this law. The law stipulates I am entitled to flexible work schedule, additional parental leave, and educational benefits. Senator Loren Legarda has filed Senate Bill No. 1439 entitled “Solo Parents Welfare Act of 2010″, which is more of the granting of discounts from purchases. I amenable to these discounts but again, it will only apply to specific age groups of children.
It would be beneficial for a solo parent if the government will just grant additional personal exemption from individual income tax and educational benefits in terms of discounts when their children enter college.
Will it be more beneficial to amend and strengthen the Solo Parents’ Welfare Act of 2000 or other solo parent may apt to support the divorce bill? Some of the reasons for being a solo parent can be a ground for divorce.
